I am at a loss for a way to criticize tonight's Zombie Simpsons. It was so incoherent, random and boring that the only way to address it on its own level would be for me to drag my knuckles across the keyboard in a random pattern. So that's exactly what I'm going to do.
About the rats, the poison, the car crash and the rowboat:

Finally, we come to the clock tower scene, the giant sign scene, the helicopter ride and the rainbows that shot out of Maggie's head for some reason:

Ahhh, that was cathartic. Could anyone else make anything out of that? Or have we crossed a line into something so totally disconnected from reality and thought that it's simply beyond our ability to digest?
I think it was either a parody of The Da Vinci Code or National Treasure, but my wife may have said it best when she said "I think they've given up on trying to keep any intellectual viewers."
ReplyDeleteI'm speechless too. Two hours later and I'm still not sure what I watched. Was the repeated breaking of the fourth wall even necessary? It introduced an element of audience interactivity/engagement on which the show has never relied; moreover, it felt hella contrived and did nothing to make the plots entertaining. You hit the nail on the head about the rainbows shooting out of Maggie's head - "for some reason." For some reason, the brain trust at Fox thought that a lifeless take on The DaVinci Code (does anyone still care about that?) woven together with Simpsons characters as filler would form an episode worth watching. They were dead wrong.
ReplyDeleteIt had the same feel as "Lisa the Drama Queen", not so much because it's a Lisa heavy episode as because they took a recent movie that no one really cares about, copied the plot, slammed their own characters into it, and called it a day. The laziness of it all is breathtaking.
ReplyDeleteWere the same Fox executives who were responsible for the slate of Epic/Date/Scary/Disaster Movie(s) put in charge of Zombie Simpsons recently? Making a pop culture reference is not the same thing as making a joke about pop culture.
